Intiwawa is a dynamic young organisation that fights poverty in the slums in Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. Founded in Peru and Germany in 2007, today our network consists of Arequipa and Berlin. Our main focus is in a small settlement on the outskirts of Arequipa called San Isidro.
Living standards for most families in San Isidro are miserable. Poor standards of hygiene and a lack of sanitary facilities in San Isidro cause water pollution and malnutrition. Furthermore, poor education leads to a high level of illiteracy, making it difficult for families to improve their lives. Child labour and domestic violence are part of everyday life in a Peruvian slum.
why san isidro?
The living conditions in San Isidro are amongst the worst in Arequipa. Even today, virtually every family in the community is dependent on the tough manual labour of brick production for an income. 15 hour shifts in unhealthy and inhumane conditions are commonplace. Intiwawa is the only active organization in the area and we concentrate our efforts here, in order to ensure a brighter future for the local people.
our three principles:
1. 100% of donations go straight to Peru. Administrative costs are covered by
2. We are not paid for our work. All work is done on a voluntary basis.
3. We never refuse help. We offer as much flexibility as possible to allow
volunteers to bring their own ideas to the organization.
